Chat emotes

7TV, BTTV or FFZ Emotes Not Showing what to check, by platform

When chat shows catJAM or OMEGALUL as plain words, one of five things is wrong. Four take a minute to fix. The fifth is the streamer's, and here is how to tell.

The five checks

  1. 1

Is the extension on for this site?

In the Blerp extension, press the Blerp button on the stream, open the menu and look at Chat emotes. It is off until you switch it on. 7TV, BTTV and FFZ each have a per-site switch in their own settings too.

  2. 2

    Reload the stream

Switching an emote extension on registers it for pages opened after that. A tab that was already open keeps showing words until you reload it.

  3. 3

Are you on the site, not the app?

Emote extensions run in desktop Chrome and Firefox. The Twitch, Kick, YouTube and Rumble apps and mobile browsers show emote names as text; that is a limit of the apps, not a bug.

  4. 4

Does the streamer have a set on this platform?

7TV, BTTV and FFZ keep one set per linked channel. A streamer who set up emotes on Twitch has none on Kick or YouTube unless they set those up too, and BTTV and FFZ have no Kick sets at all. Globals still show; the channel's own emotes don't.

  5. 5

Is it a picture the site blocks?

X and TikTok block BTTV's picture host, so BTTV emotes show as names there in every extension. 7TV and FFZ show.

On Twitch

  • Both extensions on at once can double up: run 7TV's extension or Blerp's for 7TV emotes, not both, or you may see two pictures.
  • Twitch's own emotes and subscriber emotes always show; if those are words too, the problem is Twitch's chat itself, not an extension.
  • Emotes added to 7TV, BTTV or FFZ a moment ago can take a few minutes to reach chat.

On Kick

  • Only 7TV has Kick sets. A channel's BTTV or FFZ emotes can't show on Kick with any extension, unless the streamer links Twitch and Kick on Blerp, which carries their Twitch set over for Blerp viewers.
  • Kick subscriber emotes don't show through 7TV: Kick doesn't share them with other services. They show in Kick's own chat for subscribers.

On YouTube

  • 7TV and BTTV look up YouTube sets by channel. Most streamers set emotes up on Twitch only, so YouTube chat gets globals and nothing else until they link YouTube on 7TV or BTTV, or link Twitch and YouTube on Blerp.
  • 7TV's own extension has had YouTube bug reports open since 2023. If 7TV shows nothing on YouTube, the Blerp extension is a second way to see the same sets.

If you're the streamer

Viewers asking why your emotes are words usually have no extension at all. Pin which one to install. If they have one and still see words on Kick or YouTube, your set lives on Twitch only; link your accounts on Blerp and it follows you.

Questions

Why can some viewers see the emotes and I can't?

They have an emote extension on and you don't, or yours is off for this site. Emotes from 7TV, BTTV and FFZ are never part of the chat itself.

Why did emotes stop working after an update?

Chat sites change their pages often and extensions catch up within days. Reload first; if it persists across streams, check the extension's store page for an update.

Can I see 7TV emotes in the Twitch mobile app?

Not in the official app. Third-party chat apps on Android and iOS add them; on desktop, any emote extension does.

Does Blerp show emotes on more sites than 7TV?

It shows 7TV, BTTV and FFZ emotes on Twitch, Kick, YouTube, TikTok LIVE, X and Rumble, with channel sets wherever the service has them. Which emotes show where
