Emote guide

7TV vs BTTV vs FFZ which emote extension, or one that shows all three

Half the emotes in a busy Twitch chat aren't Twitch emotes. They come from 7TV, BetterTTV and FrankerFaceZ, three free services with three separate extensions. Here is how they differ, and how to see all of them with one.

What each one is

  • 7TV

The newest of the three, known for animated and wide emotes and the biggest public library. Streamers add emotes on 7tv.app; the 7TV help center covers Twitch and Kick.

  • BetterTTV (BTTV)

The long-running extension that adds its own emotes and chat features to Twitch, with YouTube support marked as beta in its store listing.

  • FrankerFaceZ (FFZ)

Twitch only, with a public emote library where every emote has its own page and a set of mod and chat tools.

Why some viewers see words instead of emotes

None of these emotes are part of Twitch, Kick or YouTube. A viewer only sees them with the service's extension, or with one that reads all three. Everyone else sees the emote's name as plain text, which is why a busy chat can look like a wall of random words.

Each service also only knows the channels linked to it. A streamer who set 7TV up on Twitch has no 7TV emotes on their Kick or YouTube chat unless they set it up there too, and BTTV and FFZ have no Kick sets at all.

How streamers add them

  • Sign in to the service's website with your Twitch account and add emotes from its library to your channel. Give your mods editor access so they can add too.
  • Or make your own on Blerp. Anyone can add Blerp emotes, no Affiliate needed, and each emote gets its own page.
  • Tell chat which extension to install, or point them at one that shows all three.

Make an emote

One extension that shows all three

Turn on Chat emotes in the Blerp browser extension's menu and 7TV, BTTV and FFZ emotes show as pictures in Twitch, Kick, YouTube, TikTok LIVE, X and Rumble chat, along with Blerp emotes. Off by default, free, no account needed.

Questions

Which one should a new streamer pick?

Most pick 7TV for the animated library and Kick support, then add BTTV and FFZ for viewers who already use them. The emotes a viewer sees depend on what the viewer installed, not on what you picked.

Do I need all three extensions to see every emote?

With the three services' own extensions, yes. The Blerp extension reads all three lists at once, so one install covers them.

Are 7TV, BTTV and FFZ emotes free?

Yes, all three are free for viewers and streamers.

Can I search 7TV, BTTV and FFZ emotes in one place?

Blerp's emote search looks through Blerp emotes, 7TV and FrankerFaceZ, plus BetterTTV's global emotes. Search emotes

Can I download emotes from Blerp?

You can always download your own Blerp emotes. Downloading other creators' emotes comes with Blerp Unlimited.
