If you’re trying to type in chat on Twitch but your messages won’t send, you’re not alone.

Chat restrictions are common and usually happen for a specific reason.

Here are the most common causes and how to fix them.

1. You’re Timed Out

If a moderator timed you out, you’ll temporarily lose the ability to send messages.

Timeouts can last anywhere from a few seconds to several minutes.

Once the timer ends, you’ll be able to chat again.

2. You’re Banned From the Channel

If you’ve been banned, you won’t be able to send messages in that channel at all.

Only moderators or the streamer can remove a ban.

3. Follower-Only Chat Is Enabled

Some channels restrict chat to followers.

If this setting is enabled, you’ll need to follow the channel and wait for the required time period before chatting.

4. Subscriber-Only Chat Is Enabled

Some streamers enable subscriber-only chat during busy streams.

In this case, only paid subscribers can send messages.

5. Slow Mode Is Enabled

Slow mode limits how often users can send messages.

You might need to wait 10–60 seconds between messages before sending another one.

6. Your Account Needs Verification

Some channels require viewers to verify their account with:

  • Email verification

  • Phone verification

Until your account is verified, you may not be able to chat.

7. Twitch Chat Is Experiencing Issues

Occasionally Twitch chat may temporarily stop working due to platform issues.

Refreshing the page or logging out and back in often fixes this.

8. Browser Extensions Are Blocking Chat

Sometimes browser extensions interfere with Twitch chat.

Try:

  • Disabling extensions

  • Using an incognito window

  • Switching browsers

These steps often resolve the issue quickly.
